Data Analysis Protocol

 Plan, Do, Study, Act

The PDSA model is an effective protocol for grade level/department teams to use data to validate instructional strategies.  Through an action research approach, educators will develop instructional and measurable plans to solve student achievement problems.  The Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle is an instructional protocol for testing an instructional strategy by planning it, trying it, observing the consequences, and then acting on what is learned from those results.

To yield the best results from the protocol, do all the steps of the cycle.

  • State the objective of the plan: What will the team do?
  • Make predictions about what will happen and why.
  • Develop a plan to test the change (  Who will do it? What? When? How? What data must be collected?  )
  • Document problems and unexpected observations.
  • Collect and assess data.
  • Analyze the data.
  • Compare the data to the team's predictions.
  • Summarize what the team has learned.
  • Modify plans as needed, including the action, or approach.
  • Prepare the next plan.
